Fanning and scarcely 61 degrees?
« on: February 15, 2014, 02:59:04 pm »
the only time I have ever seen bees fanning the entrance was when a nectar flow was on, or was very hot or when both contitions were present. There might be a bit of a nectar flow on but nothing close to hot enough to warrant fanning. Any thoughts...

Orientation. Aren't they new nucs?

They are, but  no flying, no scenting, only one hive doing it..

Seen orientation flights many times .heads facing front of hive, taking slow circles around first hive then in ever expanding circles.

I'm thinking when you hive a swarm. They fan to fill the air with pheromone to guide everyone into the box.

Keeper, He's in Florida. He doesn't even wear a coat, much less wrap hives.

No tooting, but nucs were installed into standard hives over a week ago, their former home was waxed cardboard box nuc which I removed and burnt. So no need at this point for the bees to scent, but they weren't, just fanning, only one hive.

It could be drying nectar if there is stuff coming in or you are feeding. A bit of top venting may help them remove the moist air.

I haven't started any mite treatment at all on them, not was there treatment prior to me getting them. the temperatures have been in the mid to upper 60's by day, and mid to upper 40's at night why do not believe heat was an issue. don't think I'm new to the strong enough to be gathering enough nectar to need to fan to condense. I really haven't been into him yet I've been letting them acclimate, will  get into them next week. I have started open feeding a sugar slurry, they seem to get after it pretty good. Looking to have them get serious about drawing out the foundation. I have inner and outer covers, ventilation shouldn't be a issue yet.

Still don't need all the extra moisture, trying to make it a easy conversion no real drying needed, if there is a nectar flow in progress regardless how small trying to keep it simple.

Just a weird thought to confuse you more.

You can get entrance fanning when a queen goes out on a mating flight.

After reading you can now press the "dump" key.    ;D

I'll stick my neck out on this one---could it be that you have a virgin queen that has gone out on a mating flight?
