My (absolutely wonderful) husband started our new bee hive stands this weekend!  Still have work to do on the foundation part,  but aren't they beautiful!!

Nice stands, and I bet that whole garden looks great when things are up.  :)

nicely done. I prefer the height that those type of stands provide over cinderblocks or pallets.
I'm starting to think that the bees are keeping me...

Thanks everybody!

I am a little worried they are too high, but I told Michael he will just have to build me a step stool if we have a good honey year!

I don't know if we will paint them or not yet.  Depends on how long it takes us to finish them :)  I have 4 hives to move onto them so want to do that before it really warms up.  then we'll have enough room for some nucs!

I'm so excited, but now it's 30 and snowing in atlanta again.  Grrrrr.

love,
ziffa

Hey Lazy and Riverbee - Here's a view of my garden that might fit your paradigm better!  :) 3 days of ice and snow in Atlanta.  YUK!  But still beautiful.  As long as it doesn't last!

It will be upper 50s this weekend though.  Hubby says the girls are flying.  I"m soo worried about early spring starvation!

love,
ziffa

Yup! its me blabbing about bees to the reporters  8)

I like spending a little time getting it shipshape and right from the start .

Its a beeyard on top of the Towns theater, bit of a PR coo .

The idea was to get in the local paper but it ended up in both local papers, the radio, local tv news and wound up on prime time news all across whole country  8) :D  8)
Also a year later in two ladies magazines

It took them less than 3 hrs to settle in and start bringing home pollen to the hive  :P

And that hive on the stand, is that bottom box plastic? What do you think of it?

Its called the "universal botten" the universal bottom and made from foam, frigolit, polly,  compact insulation

It was designed by a Group of Swedish beekeepers.

It is a raised high bottom with a metal ventilation plate at back that can be opened for inspection, medication, and it Draws condensates moisture like the rear wall of a fridge under the Winters months.

Some don't like it beecause the bees can build burr comb, but i see it as a buffet to keep over productive Queens from swarming or if the bees build faster then I can put on new boxes they Always have some extra room, a buffet  ;)

There are Three or more options for the entrance with an upper and lower entrance.

Summer, Winter, mouse guard, and drone, Queen excluder.

Thanks  :-[

One other thing that is important, I like the stands to bee lowish, but at least 30-40cm off the ground 12-16inches.

This is so the early morning and late season ground moisture/damp doesn't hinder the hive from starting to work early in the morning.

IMPORTANT

Another important thing is they should bee Place in a leeward area, a friend did research last summer and the hives that were out of the wind gathered 30-40% more honey :o

They were 20 meters or yards apart in rappe seed fields.
