General Advice for moving hives?
« on: June 06, 2017, 08:06:00 pm »
3Reds and I have decided we need to move at least two, if not all three, of our hives out of our back yard and onto a friend's property 12 miles away.

I've not had to move a whole hive more than a few inches before, so I'm looking for advice.

I know I need to wrap a strap around all of the hive body parts, and fashion some kind of screen over the entrances, then secure the screen in place either early in the morning before the bees leave or late at night while they are all in.  I think my preference would be at dawn.

One of the hives has two deeps and a medium.  One has two deeps, and one has one deep and one medium.  I am mostly worried about how heavy the hive with two deeps and a medium will be.  Assuming I can lift it, I'll use a wagon to move the bees from the back yard to the front yard and the truck.  The truck won't go into the back.

The property in question is just raw land.  Lots of live oak, mesquite, and chinese tallow and brown eyed susans.  There is plenty of grass and some cows.  I assume that other native flowers are in the area, depending on the season.  There are two ponds within flying distance, so water shouldn't be a problem.

Once we get the hives in place, I foresee me leaving critical pieces of equipment 12 miles and 30 minutes away.  I'm thinking a putting a small portable building or chest with a few essentials on the property.  I'm wondering what are the most likely things to get forgotten.

Anyway, I'd like to hear how other beeks handle moving their hives and checking on them when the hives are no longer a few feet out the back door.

Ask around if anyone has a two man hive lift to borrow, 2 deeps and a med may have some weight to it.
Screen them at night.

We may have to wait until we can harvest that medium box.

Do you think I could transport the deeps as separate boxes and reunite them onsite?

Like CBT said, we have found one of these hive carriers makes it easy to carry a hive.  Money well spent.  :)

Thanks Lee.

I'll need to find a willing friend, too.  Or does it come with those two guys in the picture?

Mann Lake their hive carrier marked down to $49.95.  https://www.mannlakeltd.com/hive-carrier?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Mann%20Lake%20Ltd.&utm_content=

I always seem to forget something like an entrance reducer or queen excluder.  Before leaving the house I mentally walk through what I plan to accomplish on my trip. How about something to cut weeds down with?

At the new site, why not store duplicate 'essentials'......smoker, hive tool ,brush, smoker fuel in an empty hive ?

I use a surplus ammo box for holding smoker, hive tool, brush, BBQ-grille-type lighter, a small spray can of WD-40 to get the smoker going (I'm lazy).

The beauty of the ammo box is that it is airtight, you can put a lit smoker in it and close the lid and within a minute you hear a 'pop' as the lid is sucked down from lack of air for the smoker; I can put it away and put the box in the back of the vwehicle without worrying about setting it on fire.

Another ammo box could be stuffed with extra fuel.
