new queen query
« on: May 29, 2017, 03:58:07 pm »
I have a queen that was released from the intro cage within the last 12 hours. she was accepted & is running the frames. my question is; there are not very many bees left in this nuc. I can give them a frame of brood but is it safe to add more bees at this point or should I add bees with a newspaper barrier?

Rober,

I just added more bees to splits today. I've had good luck with added a frame of mostly capped brood covered with nurse bees. I spritz them with 1-1 sugar syrup with a dash of vanilla extract to cover the foreign hive scent and drop em in. Haven't noticed very much fighting at all. As the brood emerges, it adds a lot more bees and the nurse bees become foragers.

Hope this is helpful. :)
