weed control
«

I have an invasive weed problem near some hives. I've pulled what I can to no avail. I mulched last year but the creeping Charlie just grew right over the mulch. I hate using chemicals even when bees are not involved but this is out of control. i'm thinking about spraying small areas with round up at night & then covering the sprayed area with a tarp. for several days. sound safe enough?

Can you just cover the area with black plastic and let the weeds bake? The weeds will die after a few days of hot sun.

tried that too. the Creeping Charlie just grows over it. I'll just keep pulling it. there's a line that comes up a lot in the 'I Ching ', Perseverance furthers. there is one vine i'll spray & cover it with a bucket. that should be pretty safe.

another way is to cover with clear plastic for 2 weeks, everything germinates and then take the clear plastic off and cover with black plastic for 2 or so more weeks to kill everything that is growing

I've tried solarization too. the creeping Charlie grew over the plastic & the nut sedge grew thru it. I was on a gardening website & someone asked how to deal with nut sedge. the best answer cracked me up. the advice was to just pack up & move.

My students all giggle when anyone mentions 4/20. Apparently it is some kind of celebration for marijuana?
So, what IS the best way to control
weed
?

rober, give up on pulling creeping charlie or spraying it with roundup, neither works, even if sprayed with straight roundup. or covering with plastic. the herbicides that works to kill creeping charlie are herbicides with 'dicamba' or 'triclopyr' in them. i can ask my lawn guy what his mix is.
in the country i really don't care, in the city suburbs, different story........
wm.....4/20..........?.................
two guys in california started this.
a celebration now but way back when, it was just lingo for mj.

Rober, my daughter is finishing up a Master Gardeners course, where they learn how to treat unwanted weeds. Salt. Just pour the salt on the plant, may have to repeat several times. Worth a try maybe..
I'll give her a whistle and see if she may have something to add

Seems to me you just get some of the 4/20 and stop caring about the weeds.

--- 4/20 or 4:20 is the universal time that mj users light up across the world. Getting towards the end of the day and time to relaaaaaax.
Hey Rober, my daughter is a certified Master Gardener, she asks: Are you sure this weed is Creeping Charlie, some folks call it Birdseye speedwell, or Purple Nettle?

Try apple cider vinegar and epsom salt , maybe 1/3 cup epsom salt to 1/2 gallon vinegar.

That's a good combination Gbee. I've heard too that just plain table salt poured onto the plant works wonders, but haven't tried that one yet.

4 20 started with 2 guys in california and 3 other guys, they were called the WALDOS...........
lol, look it up....google university. just their signal to smoke weed when school let out and at a specific place, a wall......
funny story, then the grateful dead band for all you dead heads, or dead head followers started a do dah about smoking weed everyday at 4 20 pm,
and then april 20 became the 'nat'l day..............
geez.............. jen's the hippy, i am the straight lace ............
and salt and vinegar is not going to 'cure' creeping charlie........... might as well do the 4 20 thing as perry suggested and forget about it.........

You could try borax , but if you use to much nothing will grow there for a long time. From what I can tell it's not toxic but I'd do some research before putting it around my hives.

back in the day I walked into a dead concert at the fillmore west at 8:00 P.M. one night & it was daylight when it was over. that was an unusual night.
the creeping Charlie is a formidable foe. i'm not into 'lawns'. I plant lots of white clover & have actually planted dandelions. the creeping Charlie & chickweed have even choked those out in some areas. I wonder how long the effects of salt lasts? I had some flower beds that I completely dug up & started over to get rid of it as the C.C. was completely intertwined in the roots of everything.

Creeping Charlie, what a drag. Leaving even a small piece of root will allow it to return bigger and badder than ever. I've used some chemicals but am leaning toward a "live and let live" philosophy. Good luck. Ted

You want to get reed of it, the next time you get an oil change or ask and they may give you some, cut the vine down as close to he ground as possible than pour the oil on it and around the plant as much as possible, than cut you a piece of black poly and cover it for 3 or 4 months, it will be dead than. I also found vegetable oil will kill weeds from the oil pans I had for the beetles when I spill some, killed some bad weeds too.

Was that all night dead concert worth it Rober? Would like to have experienced a dead concert just once in my life

One more suggestion.....I use cider vinegar, salt and dawn dish detergent. The dawn strips the oil from the plant and the salt dries it up and the vinegar kills it off.
