Just like Christmas - I think we did OK
« on: April 15, 2017, 07:51:10 pm »
Well when we started we said 2 hives max and said we would crush & strain, no equipment required.  Well were up to four hives and now have equipment.  I think we did OK, we got a 2 frame extractor, un-capping tub with stainless steel tray, double sieve strainer, 5 gallon honey tank, and uncapping knife for $325.00 (CDN), only every used once.   Next adventure a new shed to store all this equipment.

there is no 'fix' when it comes to the 'addiction' of honey bees and equipment.........except for more equipment, more bees, and a place to put the bees AND store all the equipment................ :D :
CHA~CHING............ :D :D :D
then comes rendering wax, making candles, soaps, lip balm, ya know.............AND THAT EQUIPMENT............ :D :D

I can get a motor attachment for the extractor for $240.00 USD but I don't know if it is worth it with only 4 hives.  I have never extracted before only crush & strain....  Any opinions.  Thanks

Depends 40.  I have 8 and will be into 12 to 15 next year.  I bought a Larson 20 frame electric extractor 2 or 3 times used  for $200. It is more than I need but the deals r out there if you search.

I have a feeling you will grow into what you purchased   Merry Christmas!!!

With a half dozen hives the hand crank should be fine. ;)

get the motor attachment, it is worth it, buy for the future.  an example, i don't keep much more than 6 hives. last season i had 5 hives. i harvested well over 700 lbs of honey from 4 of those hives, (about 750 lbs) the 5th one i kept having queen issues.
so if you want to hand crank honey just call perry and vandy to help you out!................... :D :D :D

if you have only crushed and strained you will welcome the hand crank and more so the option to add the motor. you won't regret it.
