Package bees update
« on: April 09, 2017, 11:52:35 am »
Went into the hives today to see if my queens was out yet . I installed them Thursday. One queen was out and doing well the other is still in her cage. I was able to get a few pictures to share.

It's green , I don't know what the color is for this year. At least I think the colors correspond to the years.

Green was 2014, this year is yellow. Doesn't matter as long as you know how old she is.

That dot is green as a gourd. But it is a good clear mark and you can spot it easy and that's what counts.

lol, it's green..........

i don't mark queens and some bees just clean these painted marks off the backs of queens anyway...if you make a notation somewhere about the year of the queen; like neil said the color really doesn't matter, as long as you know how old she is.
many beeks mark queens to a color preference that they can easily find in a hive/nuc.

yes2matt, i think some new beeks might ask what you mean by 'get the best', so please elaborate. :)

Got back in the hives today, seen lots of eggs and larva. One hive has been going through a 1/2 gallon of syrup a day and the other not far behind. But have got a lot of drawn comb. At the current rate there drawing comb I'll have to add a second brood box before long. Lots of pollen stored and syrup. Keep in mind though I started with some drawn comb in each hive so that really got them going good. I did however see a single mite on the bottom board I guess that's to be expected . Syrup consumption seems to be slowing but I think that's due to the natural flow going on now. Just thought I'd share what's been going on any thoughts are much appreciated.

Green bee, it sounds like you have things under control to me. Add the second deep when they're working frames 2 and 9. Don't forget to bait the second deep. ;)

Drawing comb. When I see the bees starting to draw comb on frames 2 and 9, I typically move those frames up and center of the next deep I put on, and replace them with frames with foundation below. Just how I do it. I might not get around quite as often as someone with a couple of hives so I prefer to err on the side of caution and give them extra room early.

I am glad you got them before you went out of town, now you don't have to worry about them.
