My daughter and me doing our hobby together.
« on: January 01, 2014, 12:40:17 pm »
My 12 year old daughter selling honey and bee products for the Indiana Beekeepers' Association at the Indiana State Fair 2013

My daughter Maggie and me. Our honey business "Magpie Apiaries" comes from my daughter's nickname.

Awesome!  Start them young, we need all the young beekeepers we can get.  Just take a look at the ages on the upcoming birthday list.   Cool painted hives too.... ;D

Always amazed that us ugly beekeepers can crank out such good looking progeny!

   LOL!!!  Indeed!!!!
Great Pics!!!  I see that you are training her that the OLD GUY gets the seat too!  Make sure it is well ingrained before she turns sixteen!!!   heheheh

My Daughter has asked if she can help with the bees this spring, so I am looking forward to it VERY VERY much...   about the time she turned fifteen she hasnt been interested in "hanging" with mom and dad much..  By the time she was 21 she began to realize that mom and dad werent as stupid as she thought, and in the last couple of years has returned to asking advice and spending some time with us..  It is SO GOOD to have her back...  With luck, I will have a camera operator and someone who can tend the hives if I taker her mom and run off for a few weeks now and then.  SPEND EVERY MOMENT you can with her.. to make up for the years when you become dumb before you start to get smart again!!!   :D

Jim, I think that is great. It is so important to get our children involved in activities other than video games and such. My 13 year old son (see avatar pic) will be taking his beginner bee class over the next 8 weeks. My only concern is he is doing his best to eat up what little profit I thought I could make. Every time he goes in a hive he wants to eat the honey, comb and all. He will be getting his own hives this spring. I am letting him work up a business plan for his apiary so that he knows what it costs to keep the bees.

Keep up the good work Maggie and don't let dad make you do all the work ;)

Good job on getting him involved, I agree on the video games, never were allowed in our house. Had one of my daughters come in a couple of weeks ago and tell me thanks for not having them in the house because they were such a time waster. Nearly floored me. He will always turn to bees some time in his future if he lays them down.

Great job Jim and Waverly, staying close to your kids, and preparing a new generation of beekeepers. Win win situation.

She's such a cool kid Jim.  I enjoyed working the fair with her and steering potential honey buyers towards "Magpie Apiaries"  .  Unfortunately, I started beekeeping too late.  My boy,18 all he wants to do is work on decking out his car and hanging with friends.  But, when I do need help he'll jump right in.

I'll bet in a few years he will come around and see the benefits of the hobby and he will begin to see that 'ol dad was right about many things and start spending more time with you. I was kind of that way with my dad.

I never was until he moved up here into the other house on the property.  Now we do the bees together.  I have a lot of catching up to do.

I just love to see kids involved.  I hope to get my grandkids interested in this adventure as well.  My granddaughter (age 11) has already expressed and interest, but my grandson (age 9) is only interested in how much honey we can eat.  I think that may change as time goes on.

Both mine were initiated early and have been involved in assisting me in honey judging, setting up the display, and volunteering for shifts to Look after the display.
