I’ve bought a lot of dumb things and tried a lot of dumb things…..you gotta fail a lot before you really know what you’re doing!

Maybe my dumbest move was starting out with a nuc from a local beek and not realizing that comb as black as coal was not really such a great thing.  As for equipment, I’ve wasted lots of $$ on feeders, figuring out what size of combs I like, wax vs plastic, smokers that don’t work, gloves that don't work, frame grabbers, and the list goes on.  About the only thing I never did buy was a microphone to listen to my bees in the winter.   ;D  (That's just a joke Glock, I feel for you on that one.)

This is a good thread, GLOCK.  Because, if there is one thing I have noticed, it's that beekeepers like gadgets and gizmos.   ;D
I bought some hand made entrance reducers that held in place with a type of spring system.  They didn't fit my hives and bottom boards.  The money went towards a bee club fund raiser, so that helped soften the blow.

Well, LogicalBee, I have to agree with you on the feeders. I've tried top feeders, special German made ones, jars, etc.
I finally settled on buckets.
My dumbest though, was buying those bee cosies. IMHO they had the reverse effect of what I eventually came to believe. After 3 years I cut them up and threw them out. Tarpaper baby, yeah! :)

The other thing I wish, was that Jack hadn't sent me these dumb stickers. No wonder I was having the problems I did.
Thanks Jack! >:(

Plastic frames. Those things have caused me more trouble that I want to remember. I'll be glad when they're all gone.

I love my plastic frames, but we don't need to get into that here :)  I'd say the silliest thing I bought was some nail polish to mark queens.  The first time I tried it, it ran all over her thorax and she died.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Well, there was the first 2 frame extractor. Smart buy. Worked nicely.

Then there was the 2nd 2 frame extractor. Not so smart, not needed.  One is enough.

Then came the 3rd 2 frame extractor. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Finally gave it away to keep from moving it every time I turned around.

I built some monstrous horizontal hives, 4ft long that utilized Deep frames, out of plywood. I had NO experience with Honey Bees and No experience with woodenware. The sides bulged outward allowing one side or the other of the frames to drop into the box. The follower board didn't fit either, allowing the bees access to an area without frames. An experienced Beek would have done a cut out and bonfire, I tried to coax them into the supers. A LOT of experience gained and the bonfire was held a year later!

hehe.. In following Ray..  I havent bought anything "really" silly yet, but I did have a grand idea similar to his..  I built 19 7/8 by 19 7/8 boxes thinking it would save me time if I could cut all four boards the same length. Made for a BIG hive that the bees used quite well... but....    DANG that thing was heavy!!

I've been thinking and thinking... I really haven't over spent of unneccessary things with this hobby...

However, I just asked hubby this question. He thought for a moment, then said "A bee suit for him"

:D So that tells you who's hobby this really is  :D
