Spring project

Had a call in October that a bee hive was exposed that was in an oak tree branch.  Was told it was too late to try an take and get through the winter so I made a temp home for them.  Hoping they make it through.  Here's a few pictures.  The branch is about 18" diameter.   Tube I made is 24" x 4' long.

HA! looks like the thump keg is up in the tree.

Will be watching this to see if they make it to spring. Have to give you an A+ for effort!

Used 2" x 4" welded wire for the framework.  Wrapped a sheet of 1/8" bathroom shower panel.  Wrapped that with a roll of insulation and then the tar paper.  Top of container has 2 -1/2" plywood circles then 3 - 1/2" foam board insulation pieces.  Tar tapped the top and joints.  Put in 3 - 3/4" pvc tubes for entrance/ventilation.  Filled a plastic coffee container with sugar and slipped up in from the bottom.  Stuffed the bottom with natural burlap then insulation.

Impressed! Those bees are living first class now.  I absolutely want to see the progress on this colony as it gets warmer.

You have given them the ability to defend and protection from the elements. It's up to the girls now hope they make it after your hard work. Nice pictures thanks for sharing with us bee deprived beekeepers.

I can't believe I haven't seen this thread until now!!  ???
So, is that set-up still in the tree? You wrapped them up in that to overwinter on the spot?

I have to admit I am particularly impressed.  I'll also add that I am crossing my fingers and looking forward to updates.  Isnt anyone could have given them a better chance that you did!!!

Thanks all.  I hoping to run over there maybe today if I remember.  Going to be almost 50.  They should be out playing if all's ok.  Had decent temps yesterday and was good to see them out stretching here at home.
